The observable barrier
The Static blocks or overwhelms most ordinary over-the-air communication. Conventional radio, broadcast, and long-range wireless systems usually cannot carry a clean signal through it, especially when transmitters are old, damaged, or operating without skilled maintenance.
The Static is not another name for the Tempest. The Tempest is the broader unresolved phenomenon associated with instability, recovery, memory, and the First Storm. The Static is the communications barrier through which surviving systems must operate. Their exact relationship remains unknown.
Storm Horizon Radio reaches through
Storm Horizon Radio came online in 2525 using a specialized modulation method that keeps its broadcast detectable through interference that defeats ordinary signals.
Reception remains imperfect. Distance, failing receivers, local interference, damaged infrastructure, and changes in the Static can weaken or fragment a transmission.
Signals returning
Some remnant communities maintain compatible transmitters for local announcements, markets, public messages, and commercial advertising. Their signals are weaker, but the Mainframe can detect, capture, preserve, and sometimes relay them through the wider network.
Compatible signals also carry original music. A small number of remnant performers can recognize Storm Horizon Radio, while only rare sources have completed verified two-way contact.
Attrition, not an army
The central danger is not a defined military or political enemy. It is the slow loss of the systems that still hold memory and connection.
